F.P.G.A. Golf Etiquette: Keeping Up the Pace of Play
One of the most important rules of golf etiquette is keeping pace with the group ahead of you, not simply staying ahead of the group behind you.
Why It Matters
-
Keeps the entire course moving smoothly.
-
Prevents backups and long waits on tees and fairways.
-
Makes the round more enjoyable for everyone.
-
Shows respect for fellow golfers and the golf course staff.
Tips for Maintaining Pace
1. Be Ready to Play
-
Arrive at your ball while others are hitting.
-
Know your yardage and club selection before it's your turn.
-
Limit practice swings to one or two.
2. Play "Ready Golf"
-
If it is safe, hit when ready rather than strictly waiting for honors.
-
Encourage your group to do the same.
3. Watch Every Shot
-
Help your playing partners track their golf balls.
-
This reduces time spent searching for lost balls.
4. Limit Ball Searches
-
Under the Rules of Golf, players have 3 minutes to search for a lost ball.
-
If a ball may be lost or out of bounds, hit a provisional ball.
5. Move Efficiently Around the Green
-
Park carts between the green and the next tee when possible.
-
Read your putt while others are putting.
-
Mark scores at the next tee, not on the green.
6. Keep Up, Not Catch Up
-
If there is an open hole ahead of your group, you are behind pace.
-
The goal is to stay close to the group in front of you throughout the round.
A Good Rule of Thumb
If you reach a tee box and the group ahead is already on the next tee, it's time to pick up the pace. If you consistently find an empty fairway and an empty green ahead, it's time to pick up the pace.
This is one of the best ways to ensure every player enjoys a smooth, timely round.
